When to Service your Piano

What can happen to your piano over as year pass?

The piano is made of very fine diverse materials.  Such as selected and exotic woods, felt, leather, ivory, plastic, steel, cast iron, copper, brass etc.  With time all of these components age and change.  The environmental conditions for each piano may vary widely.  In general, the older the piano, the more work can be expected in its repair.  Felts and leather can be eaten by moths, worn or become compressed from use.  Iron can rust, wood joints can separate, become cracked or suffer other forms of damage.  Strings lose their elasticity and tone.  Pinblock can become loose and not support the tuning pins making the piano untuneable.  Soundboard damage can include cracking, separation from the bridges, ribs and rim, loosing its crown.  The whole action can change its geometry and functionality.  Action parts could be loosed, worn, missing or broken and become out of regulation. Especially affected are: hammersbackchecksknuckleskey bushingskeytops and dampers.  Veneer can become separated or missing, paint will burn from sunlight, and become faded or peeled.

A piano may require anyone out of a potential 450 different repairs.  A piano is assembled from over 5000 parts.  Most of the individual parts are located in the action which requires more than 20 different regulations and adjustments on each key and about 10 other for the rest of the piano.
